Exciting news! A new official VR Panzer Dragoon game has been announced by Wildman Inc! Panzer Dragoon Voyage Record (tentative title) is coming to VR headsets in 2020 or 2021!
On the 25th anniversary of Panzer Dragoon, Wildman Inc has announced that it will release a new VR title called Panzer Dragoon Voyage Record (tentative title), which is an officially licensed Panzer Dragoon software title dedicated to VR headsets! It is amazing that after all this time, we will be getting not one, but two new but very different Panzer Dragoon games (three if you include the confirmed Panzer Dragoon II Zwei remake).
The official press release states that Panzer Dragoon Voyage Record is a VR dramatic shooter which will allow players to relive “various episodes” that appeared in the three Saturn games, Panzer Dragoon, Panzer Dragoon II Zwei, and Panzer Dragoon Saga. The included episodes have not been announced yet, but according to an automated translation of the Japanese language press release and this official tweet, it will be an omnibus that allows you to meet the Blue Dragon (Type 01), Lagi, the Prototype Dragon (Type 02), Guardian Dragon, and Atolm in VR.
Panzer Dragoon Voyage Record will be a completely new game built from the ground up, allowing players to play episodes of the Panzer Dragoon trilogy with new graphics and in first person perspective optimised for VR headsets. There will be a new input method so that the VR controller will be similar to the handgun of the dragon rider. Panzer Dragoon Voyage Record will be a single player game and is expected to be released in the 2020 Japanese Fiscal Year (which goes until March 2021).
Panzer Dragoon Voyage Record is not a full remake and it is unclear how many episodes of the Saturn trilogy the title will feature at this point, or which VR platforms it will support, but nonetheless this is exciting news. We can’t wait to learn more.
You can follow the official Panzer Dragoon Voyage Record account on Twitter.
Wildman who is developing the game is known for his experience with VR games. You may have heard of his previous work The Gunner of Dragoon which is a VR dragon riding experience with many similarities to the Panzer Dragoon series.
The developer himself is a fan of the original Panzer Dragoon series. He hopes to make a safe game that values the original. The dragon on the screen under development retains the familiar “nostalgic shape” for this reason.
Original Panzer Dragoon creator Yukio Futatsugi tweeted to congratulate Wildman on announcing the game. He is not involved with either Panzer Dragoon Voyage Record or the upcoming Panzer Dragoon: Remake but nevertheless hopes that both games will succeed.
